Using the site
Sound Decibel Meter is free and provided as is. You do not need an account to use the meter or the guides. By using the site, you agree to these terms.
Measurements are estimates
Readings come from your device's microphone. They are estimates, not certified measurements. The site is not a calibrated sound level meter and does not meet the IEC 61672 Class 1 or Class 2 standard. Readings change with the device, the microphone, the spot, and how the phone is held, so compare readings only when they come from the same setup.
Do not use readings as the basis for legal decisions, workplace compliance, or medical decisions. For those, use proper equipment and a qualified professional.
Health information
The guides and charts give general information about sound levels and hearing. They are not medical advice. The guides report limits from NIOSH, OSHA, the WHO, and the CDC as published. Those bodies set the limits, not this site. If you have ringing in your ears, muffled hearing, pain, or any other concern about your hearing, see a doctor or hearing professional.
The listening demo
The listening demo on each level page plays pink noise at a level set relative to 60 dB, capped at +20 dB. Start at a low volume and raise it slowly. Stop the demo if it causes discomfort.
The site cannot control the playback level on your device. The actual volume depends on your device, headphones, and browser settings, so the site is not responsible for the level you hear.
Your device and browser
The meter depends on your device, microphone, browser, and operating system, and each of these affects readings. The site cannot control them. While measuring, keep the screen on and the tab in front. Phones stop the microphone when the screen locks, and readings stop with it.
Acceptable use
You agree not to try to disrupt or break into the site, not to overload it with automated requests, and not to use it for any unlawful purpose.
Content and external links
The text and design of this site belong to the site operator. If a page links to another website, that website has its own terms and privacy practices. We are not responsible for them.
No warranty
The site is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not promise that it will always be available, that every reading or guide will be accurate, or that it will suit a particular purpose.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, the site operator is not liable for any loss or damage that comes from using the site, including from relying on its readings or guides.
